Hyperbolically? Yes. In reality? Also yes. We’re not at the end of the rope yet, but things are dire.
Let’s get this straight. Our president, who almost certainly won the presidency by virtue of voting manipulation, and who is not accountable to any court order even if it goes against all law and moral sensibility, just got $100 billion in funding for a secret police service that’s aiming to detain and deport every single brown-skinned person in America, as well as any other “undesirables” (hi, that’s me, a trans person!) or anyone who’d dare speak up against him. Oh, and also healthcare is over if you’re low-income or disabled. Oh, and also you’re not allowed to stop lighting the world on fire. Oh, and if you ever need food stamps but are in between jobs, you just get to starve instead. Oh, and also we’re gonna be five trillion, with a T, more dollars in debt as a nation at the end of it all.
Don’t get me wrong. This is extremely alarmist. But that’s because the current state of things is extremely alarming. The (only) two good parts of the Big Beautiful Bill, increased child tax credits and “no tax on tips” provision, far pale in comparison to the harm that will be caused the rest of it. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people will almost certainly die as both a direct and intentional result of this bill. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, more will die as an indirect and unintentional result of this bill.
Every single one of these deaths rests on the cowardice of our elected officials, and on our inability to organize to overthrow the immoral Trump regime. As I see it, there are only two paths to saving these lives which will otherwise be lost: a general strike, or violence. Violence, of course, plays directly into the Trump regime’s hand; they’ve already strived to use the narrative of “internal enemies” and “violent insurgents” to bring back zombified husks of ancient laws to justify the use of the military against American citizens. In reality, this violent insurgency doesn’t exist, just like most things that senile, servile Trump claims.
That leaves a general strike as the only politically viable option. The economy must come to a grinding halt until the doomed course the Trump regime has set us on is reversed. There must be no fast food, no manufacturing, no services, no quarter given, and no quarter produced. We must share food with our neighbors to weather the storm. We must guard each other with our lives. This is the only way we can make it through relatively unscathed. To sit and do nothing is to sit idly by and let hundreds, thousands, millions of people perish. Millions is not hyperbolic, by the way: IT’S THEIR GOAL.
If you are reading this while Trump is still in office, it is my conviction you must join in and encourage the general strike. Our labor is the only thing that keeps this country afloat, and without it, we can threaten to sink the whole boat. You must talk with your coworkers and spread this information, and you must coordinate and act together as one.
Sign your strike card and join the tally at https://generalstrikeus.com/. Talk to your coworkers about it, write letters to the editor of your local newspaper, go to your town halls and speak to it. There is anger, and there is reason, now we must simply channel the anger to action.
The alternative is to sit and let millions of people die over the next several years. What will you do?
